Hi! I'm Val, the person behind Sunset Fiber Company. Also pictured are my husband and our two children. We are wearing sweaters that were originally knit by my grandmother over 30 years ago.

I started Sunset Fiber Company in 2023, but the idea behind it came much earlier. After learning to crochet with my best friend in junior high, I continued my love of handmade items in later years with baby gifts for friends and, eventually, items for my own children. Experimenting with locally sourced, hand-dyed yarn for these toys, hats and mittens showed me the unique look that could be created by high quality, hand-dyed yarn.

As my son and daughter grew, I was drawn to joint activities and sustainable family initiatives. These include growing vegetables, upcycling clothing and selecting long-lasting high-quality products to create less waste. Creating a sustainable mindset for the next generation led me to want more time with my kids. So in 2023, I made the career leap. I left my long-time job as a nurse and pursued the dream of my own business.

Sunset Fiber Company focuses on quality yarn that creates one-of-a-kind garments for its customers. The focus on quality ensures hand-crafted products have a depth of color that’s long-lasting and doesn’t change over time.

Our fiber is all hand-dyed on-site at the company’s Pennsylvania location, utilizing as many energy and water saving dye techniques as possible. These techniques include exhausting dye baths to make sure there is as little dye waste as possible and re-using dye baths for the same colorway to reduce water consumption.
